About Nose Surgery
Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, usually focuses on improving the appearance of the nose. This may entail removing a large dorsal nasal hump, changing the projection of the nose, or just refining a bulky but well-sized nose. Sometimes the surgery is more focused on function and improving airflow and known as a septoplasty. A rhinoplasty can be performed alone, or may be combined with other facial procedures such as chin surgery to achieve maximum facial balance.
At our Reston, VA, office one of our plastic surgeons will evaluate the structure of your nose in relation to your face and discuss in detail your goals and desires. At Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we also utilize computer imaging to help determine the right size and shape of your nose for rhinoplasty. Factors that influence the optimal results include the structure of your nasal bones and cartilage, the shape of your face, the thickness of your skin and your age.
The best candidates for nose surgery:
- Have cosmetic nose issues they want transformed
- Have realistic outcomes
- Desire long-term results
- Desire a natural look
Nose Surgery Reviews
"I have been a patient of Dr. Weston's since 1999, when I had my first procedures (rhinoplasty & chin implant.) I was extremely pleased with the results so I didn't think twice about going back to him when I needed a tummy tuck in 2010. I was left with a perfectly flat stomach with no visible scars after just a few months. I went back in Oct 2014 for 3rd time for a breast reduction (something I wish I had done years ago.) I went from a DD to a B cup and I couldn't be happier. As a repeat patient, I highly recommend Dr. Weston. He makes you feel very comfortable and I've never waited more than 15 minutes past my appt time in all of the years I have been going."- D.G. / Yelp / Jan 28, 2015
"I had rhinoplasty surgery (a "nose job") with Dr. Sigal. He is amazing. My nose looks exactly as I'd envisioned it and I'm so happy with the result. Four years later, I sometimes still can't believe it's me when I look in the mirror!Aside from his surgical skill, he's also warm, pleasant, friendly, and one of the kindest people you'll ever meet. I felt completely at ease around him every step of the way- even on the morning of my surgery when you're supposed to be all kinds of nervous! He is also very honest about what surgery can and can't do for you. I consulted with many surgeons before making the decision to go ahead with this, and Dr. Sigal was the only one who listened to each and every one of my concerns about my appearance and addressed each one thoughtfully and honestly. The entire staff here is wonderful, too. All the nurses, administrative staff, etc. Everyone made me feel like a part of their family throughout my surgical experience. This is especially nice whenever you're going into the OR and super-nervous- at every step, someone was with me, holding my hand, or patting me on the back, telling me that everything was going to be great, how amazing I was going to look and how quickly it was going to be over and how happy I'd be when I woke up. I don't know how many people can say surgery was a "good" experience, but here it truly was.Any time I had a question during my recovery (and there were lots!), my calls were answered and returned promptly.I'd definitely recommend Austin-Weston to anyone who's considering plastic surgery."- R.L. / Yelp / Dec 23, 2011
"Literally the best Plastic surgery office in the ever! I couldn't say enough good things about them! Everyone is so kind and caring here. I didn't have anything cosmetically done, but they did help me with an infection on my nose and Dr. Knotts is the best. I highly recommend for anything you need to have done."- J.G. / Google / May 14, 2017
"It has been eight and a half years since I had my rhinoplasty surgery with Dr. Sigal. Words cannot convey my appreciation to him and the entire staff at Austin-Weston. Nearly a decade later, I still can't believe it's really me when I look in the mirror. He did such an amazing job. My nose is perfect. It looks exactly how I dreamed it would look, and after all this time, I still think every day about how grateful I am that I chose Dr. Sigal and Austin Weston. You all truly changed my life. I am happier, more confident, and I feel more beautiful than I ever have. It was hands-down the best decision I ever made. Dr. Sigal is an absolute artist. He is the best at what he does. I still remember how easy the entire surgical experience was for me, thanks to the wonderful staff. Thank you, thank you, thank you for changing my life!"- R.L. / Facebook / Apr 22, 2015
"This place is amazing. I have been here for surgery with Dr Sigal. I had a rhinoplasty November 2015 and it changed my life. I no longer worry about my nose in pictures. It's very liberating. I have been back for fillers and botox as well. I have had filler with Dr. Knotts who was freaking awesome and listened to me when I explained what I wanted. I had botox with their new nurse practitioner Jocelyn and she was so sweet and my forehead has Not one wrinkle. I could go on forever. Im super happy I found this place!!!"- T.B. / Google / Mar 14, 2017
What to Expect
An outpatient procedure, rhinoplasty is performed while a patient is under general anesthesia at our accredited surgical facility. Depending on the technique used and the patient’s unique needs, surgery can last 2 – 4 hours. The variance will depend on the complexity and whether it is a first time (primary) or a repeat rhinoplasty.
There are two types of nose surgery procedures: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty.
Open rhinoplasty, or external rhinoplasty, involves making a small incision on the underside of the nose between the nostrils to give better access to the lower and middle parts of the nose. The plastic surgeon can then manipulate tissue, skin, and bone as needed under direct vision.
With closed rhinoplasty, or endonasal rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside of the nostrils. This technique is usually used for less complex surgeries, such as when the nose already has a good shape and is not considered too wide or too long. Due to the placement of the incisions, there is no external scar with closed rhinoplasty, but the degree of visualization is less for the surgeon so this procedure is sometimes described as 'blind.'
During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss which option is best for your specific concerns and why.
After surgery, the nose usually has a splint put on for added stability. This stays in place for a week. Patients should expect some pain, discomfort, bruising, and swelling after surgery that should subside within a few weeks. The nose will reposition and evolve into its surgically enhanced shape for months after surgery. The finished product should be fully realized within a year.
