What is a Rhinoplasty?

Enhanced Facial Harmony

Rhinoplasty Reston

Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, usually focuses on improving the appearance of the nose. This may entail removing a large dorsal nasal hump, changing the projection of the nose, or just refining a bulky but well-sized nose.

Sometimes the surgery is more focused on function and improving airflow and is known as a septoplasty. A rhinoplasty can be performed alone or may be combined with other facial procedures, such as chin surgery to achieve maximum facial balance. At our Reston, VA, office, one of our plastic surgeons will analyze your nose’s structure in relation to your face and listen to your goals and desires for surgery. The configuration of the bones and cartilage in your nose, the shape of your entire face, and the quality of your skin are taken into consideration when planning your procedure.

Your Rhinoplasty Procedure

Artful Attention to Detail

Rhinoplasty surgery is a detailed and meticulous process. The first step involves administering anesthesia to ensure the patient's comfort during the procedure. The type of anesthesia used depends on several factors, and the best one for you will be recommended by your doctor.

Rhinoplasty can be carried out through a minimally invasive (closed procedure), where the incisions are hidden within the nose, or an open procedure, in which your surgeon makes an incision in the columella, the name for the strip of tissue separating the nostrils. The structure of the nose is then carefully reshaped. A large nose can be reduced by removing some bone or cartilage. The shape of the nose and nostrils can also be refined. If the patient has a deviated septum, this will be straightened. Any projections or enlarged turbinates inside the nose can be reduced to improve breathing. After the nose’s structure has been sculpted to the ideal shape, the nasal skin is redraped, and the incisions are closed.

Rhinoplasty Recovery and Aftercare

Here for You

Rhinoplasty Reston

During recovery from rhinoplasty, the nose is usually supported by a splint or packing inside the nose, along with a splint or bandage on the outside. Initial swelling typically subsides within a few weeks.

However, the full refinement of your new nasal contours may take as long as a year, during which time you may observe subtle changes in the appearance of your nose as it settles into its permanent shape. It's not uncommon for swelling to fluctuate, often worsening in the morning, in the first year after surgery. Postoperative care instructions will be provided to ensure optimal healing and minimize the risk of complications. These instructions may include guidance on how to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or take orally, and scheduling follow-up appointments with your plastic surgeon to check the progress of your healing.

Lifelong Refinement

Within a few weeks of your procedure, most post-procedure swelling will subside. There will be residual swelling and a longer healing process, however, with final rhinoplasty results becoming fully visible within a year.

Aging can bring changes to your skin and face shape, but the results of your procedure are considered permanent. Practicing good sun protection and healthy habits can help you maintain your optimal results and facial appearance.
