WHAT IS AN OTOPLASTY?

Our team of plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery offers otoplasties to individuals who wish to alter the size and/or shape of their ears. Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a surgical procedure performed on children and adults to recontour protruding ears.

Adults can have the procedure done at any age, and parents usually choose to have the procedure on children around 5 or 6 when teasing happens and before grade school. If ears are found to be prominent during early infancy, the cartilage may still be moldable enough to recontour the ear using special splints that are worn around the clock from birth until the ear is reshaped to an acceptable place. The result of otoplasty is a more symmetrical profile that complements the rest of the face and removes a large or prominent ear from the equation. Call our Reston, VA office to schedule a consult to learn how this procedure can help you.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR AN OTOPLASTY?

  • Can be as young as infancy to correct ear abnormalities
  • Have anxiety about the look of their ears
  • Desire a long-term solution
  • Desire a natural look

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING AN OTOPLASTY?

With an otoplasty Reston patients will have this performed as an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Incisions are made behind the ear to access the cartilage. Cartilage can then be manipulated through removal, reshaping, and reforming to repair the ears for an improved, symmetrical look. Excess skin from the ear can also be removed if needed. Ear surgery is commonly used to pin back protruding ears, repair earlobes, and over reshape an ear to achieve facial balance and natural-looking results. The length of the surgery depends on the technique and the condition of the patient's ears, but is generally around 1 hour per ear.

WHAT ARE THE ANTICIPATED RESULTS AFTER AN OTOPLASTY?

Following an otoplasty, the ears will be dressed to provide protection from accidentally hitting them overnight. The dressings are removed the next day and ears examined.

A headband may be recommended to wear while sleeping for several weeks afterward. Pain and discomfort is managed with oral pain medications, and swelling and bruising is largely improved by one week with final results expected by 3 months. For our patients in Reston otoplasty results are long standing and should provide years of positive benefits for patients.
