What is a neck lift?

Our team of plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Reston, VA offers neck lift surgery to men and women who wish to improve their lower facial aesthetic. A neck lift procedure can dramatically reduce the signs of aging and improve the overall appearance of the face. As we age, fat deposits and wrinkles accumulate around the neck, and our skin loses tone and begins to sag. The neck is often the first part of the face to show aging.

For patients with excellent skin elasticity and moderate fullness of fat under the neck, neck liposuction alone can be a good alternative. Once the skin is beginning to sag or hang, or if your surgeon thinks the skin will be loose after just liposuction, a surgical incision is needed to remove this excess skin and that procedure is known as a neck lift. Through this incision, excess neck skin and fat can be repositioned and the muscles can also be tightened if necessary. This is sometimes called a corset platysmaplasty. The concept behind this is using sutures in the neck to tighten the neck muscles like a corset.

What are the benefits of a neck lift?

Nonsurgical procedures can only do so much when it comes to treating signs of aging. A neck lift can provide patients with more comprehensive results because it can address both the overlying skin and underlying tissues. This means your outcomes last far longer than conventional treatments. Additionally, our trained surgeons can correct a number of cosmetic concerns at the same time. A neck lift at our facility can provide the following benefits:

  • A slimmer and better-defined neckline
  • Reduced wrinkles and lines in the lower face and neck
  • Improved contours along the jawline
  • A more youthful look

Who is a candidate for a Neck Lift?

The best candidates for neck lift surgery:

  • Have loose skin in the area caused by weight loss, aging, or genetics
  • Have lines and wrinkles in the neck area
  • Are any age from 20 – 70+ years
  • Desire a sleeker and slimmer profile
  • Desire a long-term solution
  • Desire a natural look

What can i Expect during a neck lift?

Neck lift surgery is an outpatient procedure and performed at our accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. Incisions are typically hidden below the ear lobe and up behind the ear. Your surgeon may also recommend an incision underneath the chin. Through these incisions, excess fat is removed, muscles tightened, and excess skin is redistributed and tucked up behind the ears.  The surgery typically lasts around two hours depending on the extent of lifting required.

The neck lift can be a stand along procedure as described or combined with a facelift or facial rejunveationa procedure.

What can I expect after a neck lift?

Following a neck lift surgery, a patient commonly experiences some amount of bruising and swelling in the neck area. It’s also common for patients to have a sensation of tightness and pulling, which is a result of the neck adjusting into the new position. Typically, patients are able to return to their normal routine, such as work, in around 7 – 10 days. After a few months, you should be able to see the full effects of the surgery with a tighter, smoother, more contoured neck. The incisions are placed so they generally hide well, under the chin and behind the ears.

Neck Lift FAQ

How much does a neck lift cost?
Costs for your neck surgery will be discussed in your consultation with a member of our experienced team of surgeons. As soon as they have created your personal surgical plan, they can estimate prices for the facility, anesthesia, and other fees. To help make your neck surgery affordable, Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery accepts several payments methods, and we can give you information on low-interest medical financing.

What about nonsurgical options?
Neck lift surgery is the best way to remove loose skin, particularly if it droops or hangs. Although there are some nonsurgical skin tightening treatments that may produce some improvements, neck lift surgery can more dramatically smooth and redefine your neckline. A new and popular minimally invasive treatment called KYBELLA® reduces fat in the upper neck, which gives the appearance of a double chin; however, it doesn't correct excess skin.

Will I have visible scars?
Neck lift surgery does require one incision beneath the chin and two more near the ears. These are made so the scars are difficult for others to see. Our surgeons make every effort during your surgery to minimize visible scarring. A team member will explain scar management instructions that will encourage your incisions to heal properly — so they are thin and flat.

Can I combine a neck lift with other facial surgeries?
At your consultation, you can mention that you are thinking about another surgery, like a facelift or chin augmentation, along with a neck lift. It's normal for two or more face surgeries to be performed together to get your best results. If you are concerned about a weak chin or undefined jawline, talk to your surgeon so they can create a comprehensive treatment plan.

Should I get a neck lift or liposuction?
Based on your needs and goals, you might want to get a neck lift with surgical liposuction. This can help if you are concerned about both excess skin and pockets of fat in your neck. Your surgeon will help you decide whether a lift, liposuction, or both should be included in your treatment plan.
