how does a tummy tuck work?

Tummy tuck patients usually have the procedure in our accredited outpatient surgical facility; however, when the tummy tuck is combined with other procedures, your surgeon may recommend you stay the night in our overnight facility. For the classic tummy tuck, which is removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightening of the internal abdominal muscles, the procedure can take from 2-4 hours, depending on the extend of liposuction performed at the same time.

Most patients take 1-2 weeks off work and we recommend 6 weeks before any heavy lifting or strenuous abdominal exercise.

A tummy tuck requires a scar along the lower abdomen. For patients who do not have much excess skin, the scar may be shortened and a 'mini' tummy tuck performed. For those with excess skin, an extended tummy tuck with a longer scar is recommended, or your surgeon may even recommend the scar go all the way around the body like a belt. This last procedure is referred to as a body lift. For patients with a tight lower abdomen and mainly excess skin in the upper abdomen, a reverse tummy tuck might be a recommended operation.

The majority of patients at Austin-Weston receive a DRAINLESS technique for tummy tuck. This means no messy drains, which are often painful and can increase the risk of infection.

how long is recovery from a tummy tuck?

The results following a tummy tuck procedure equate to a tighter, more toned abdominal appearance. Scarring is a part of this procedure, but our cosmetic surgeons will create the incisions with care, placing them in inconspicuous areas so that undergarments can hide them. Patients often feel that the skin removal and flat appearance of their stomach far outweighs any scarring that resides after surgery. The abdominal area is swollen after surgery, but typical healing shows decreased swelling by 3 weeks and a final result at 3-4 months, which is when postop photographs are taken.

Tummy Tuck FAQ

What type of tummy tuck should I get?
There are three main techniques for tummy tucks: full, mini, and extended. In your consultation, we will listen to your needs and goals before performing a physical exam. Then, we can help you decide the technique that will produce your best results. A full abdominoplasty is better if you want to fix issues in the upper and lower abdomen, while a mini abdominoplasty is better if you only have issues under your belly button, such as a "pooch." An extended tummy tuck can improve the stomach as well as the upper thighs and hips.

What will my scars look like?
Incisions for your abdominoplasty will vary based on which technique is being used. For all tummy tucks, we use the smallest, thinnest incisions possible to limit scars. We also place incisions in less visible areas ( in the pubic region or belly button ) so they may be concealed by underwear or a swimsuit. Following your surgery, it's important to follow your scar management instructions so your incisions heal properly and blend into your natural skin.

Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?
Although you can get pregnant after an abdominoplasty, it will affect your results. We recommend that you be finished with planned pregnancies and childbirth before you get an abdominoplasty. If you do get pregnant after a tummy tuck, a second surgery can be performed to refresh your stomach.

Can I get a tummy tuck with another surgery?
A lot of patients add another cosmetic surgery with an abdominoplasty to give them more dramatic results. During your consultation, talk to us about your concerns so a comprehensive surgical plan can be developed that matches your goals. You might combine abdominoplasty with a thigh lift for a lower body lift or other areas for body contouring. If you want to improve your whole body after having children or losing a significant amount of weight, you may be an ideal candidate for after weight loss surgery or a mommy makeover.
