what is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is the name we give when performing surgery to restore damages done to the breasts and abdomen after childbirth. This can be any combination of surgery on the breasts and body at the same time. The most common combination of procedures is a tummy tuck and breast augmentation with lift. The total cost may vary depending on what combination of procedures are performed.

Our mommy makeover procedure is a unique approach to a total body makeover that specifically addresses the most common concerns for mothers of all ages. Without question, having children is one of the most rewarding experiences a woman will have. However, the rewards of pregnancy and childbirth can have some rather unflattering and unwanted physical effects on the mother. As a result of pregnancy or breastfeeding, a woman may be left with breasts that have little or no fullness. Mommy makeovers can fix sagging breasts that have lost volume and shape, tummy lines that have retained excess fat deposits, visible stretch marks, gapped and stretched abdominal muscles, and unwanted fat deposits around the hips and thighs. The goal of our plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery is to restore the body to a pre-pregnancy look. am i a candidate for a mommy makeover?

During a private consultation, our plastic surgeons will listen to all the concerns each patient has about her body to see if she is a good candidate for these procedures. Many women seeking these treatments and surgeries have:

  • Breasts that have changed in shape and/or volume after pregnancy
  • A tummy with bulges of fat that didn’t go away with post-pregnancy weight loss
  • Other areas of the body with stretched skin and volume loss

The best candidates for the mommy makeover are women who are also finished having children, as further childbearing will alter the results. Having a mommy makeover comes with the commitment to maintain a stable post-op weight as significant weight gain can diminish results.

What does a mommy makeover consist of?

Pregnancy changes many areas of the body, and a mommy makeover requires careful planning to address the unique issues of each patient. Sometimes these procedures are performed in one setting, and other patients choose to have them implemented in stages. Our plastic surgeons have years of experience performing these surgeries; however, sometimes the health of the patient requires more than one surgery date. The end result is still the same, just expect that some women will have more surgeries than other women and will endure a longer recovery time.

Some of the mommy makeover procedures may include a combination of:

  • Breast Augmentation
  • Breast Lift (with or without implants)
  • Breast Reduction
  • Tummy Tuck
  • Liposuction
  • Thigh Lift
  • Butt Lift
  • Arm Lift
  • Labiaplasty
  • Skin rejuvenation (laser treatments, BOTOX®, fillers)

Patients can have procedures performed on an outpatient basis, but your surgeon may request you to stay overnight in our facility. This will be discussed during your consultation.

What to expect after a mommy makeover

New moms love the fact that once the extra skin has been removed and tightened, their stretch marks are often drastically reduced. This is achieved by removing the stretch marks along with the excess skin from the lower abdomen at the time of tummy tuck. This is achieved by using a scar from hip to hip that sits low so it is covered by most bathing suits and underwear.

As with all plastic surgeries, our highly-skilled plastic surgeons will do their best to minimize scarring with careful incision techniques and placement. While the recovery time does take several months, patients are able to return to a normal routine in about 4 – 6 weeks and should wait for clearance from our office before starting to exercise again. Most patients take off work for 1-2 weeks for this procedure. The mommy makeover transformation could take up to a year to fully result, but the outcome is life changing for many women.

Mommy Makeover FAQ

How much does a mommy makeover cost?
Mommy makeover costs will vary greatly depending on what you are, including your surgery. In your consultation, one of our experienced plastic surgeons will develop your treatment plan before they will estimate your costs. A mommy makeover is about reclaiming your body after pregnancy and childbirth, so it's important to focus on reaching your goals rather than shopping for the lowest cost. Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery takes many payment options, and we can help you find low-interest medical financing — so your mommy makeover is easy to afford.

How do I decide what to include in my mommy makeover?
During your consultation with your surgeon, they will listen to your wants and needs before performing a physical examination. Following this, they can make recommendations on what should be a part of your surgical plan. Often, women include breast surgery (an augmentation, lift, or both) plus liposuction and a body lift.

What about nonsurgical treatments?
Childbirth and pregnancy can take a toll on your body, so nonsurgical procedures usually aren't enough to produce the results you want. During your consultation, your surgeon will explain both nonsurgical and surgical treatments. After listening to your concerns and goals, they will let you know about treatments like nonsurgical liposuction (SculpSure®), laser skin resurfacing, and more.

Will I have scars?
While a mommy makeover gives you a rejuvenated shape, it does leave some scarring. Your surgeon will make clean, small incisions. Most scars will be placed so they can be hidden with undergarments or swimsuits. When reviewing your recovery instructions, your surgeon or a member of our team will give you tips on scar care — so your sutures heal properly.

What if I get pregnant again?
In a perfect world, you should wait to have a mommy makeover until your family is complete so your results are not compromised. In most cases, all treated areas of your body are at risk for changing if a subsequent pregnancy were to occur. If you get pregnant after your mommy makeover, a second surgery can be performed to refresh your results.
