About Chin Augmentation
If you have inherited a small or retrusive chin and would like a more defined facial profile, chin augmentation may be a good option. As we age and fat deposits begin to accumulate in and around the chin and neck area, we can lose that photogenic profile we once enjoyed. A weak or under defined chin can accentuate the nose and make it appear larger than its actual size. Chin augmentation can contour the chin to a more desirable shape. This procedure is often combined with other facial contouring operations such as liposuction of the neck, a rhinoplasty or a face lift. It may also be performed as a stand-alone operation. Visit or call Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery, in Reston, VA to set up a consult with one of our plastic surgeons to learn more.
The best candidates for chin augmentation surgery:
- Have a weak or short chin
- Have a normal bite with well-aligned teeth and minimal overbite
- Want a more proportionate look for facial balance
- Want a more distinctive profile
Chin Augmentation Reviews
"I have been a patient of Dr. Weston's since 1999, when I had my first procedures (rhinoplasty & chin implant.) I was extremely pleased with the results so I didn't think twice about going back to him when I needed a tummy tuck in 2010. I was left with a perfectly flat stomach with no visible scars after just a few months. I went back in Oct 2014 for 3rd time for a breast reduction (something I wish I had done years ago.) I went from a DD to a B cup and I couldn't be happier. As a repeat patient, I highly recommend Dr. Weston. He makes you feel very comfortable and I've never waited more than 15 minutes past my appt time in all of the years I have been going."- D.G. / Yelp / Jan 28, 2015
"I am writing 10 years after my procedure. I don't consider this a late review; I think this is perfect timing as I am as happy with my results 10 years after as I was when I was immediately post-op. I was working at a hospital at the time and I knew that Dr Poindexter was the one the doctors' wives, and the doctors themselves, went to see. I'd had a hard plastic chin implant from a surgery more than 25 years previously. The thing was loose, movable, and made my face asymmetrical. Worse, in Dr Poindexter's opinion, it was in danger of actually eroding through the skin! Yuck! Before performing surgery, he aked me to bring in some photos of my face before i had that first unfortunate surgery. Then, in a minor in-office surgery, he removed the old implant, replaced it with a softer one that gave a more natural contour to my face and jaw, performed a neck lift, and even did a little liposuction on my jawline thru two tiny incisions under my earlobes. I had a defined jawline at last! Something I'd always wanted but never had, despite being very thin all my life. The doc and wonderful staff were very clear about what to expect and made me feel so at ease every time. I was back to work in two weeks (I just needed extra time to let the anesthesia clear my system). Since then, on my recommdation, a friend has had a face lift and other procedures done by Dr Poindexter and is very pleased with the results. I'll let her write her own review, though. Dr Poindexter is just the best!"- M.B. / Yelp / Sep 05, 2013
"This place is fantastic! Dr. Poindexter is not only awesome, but will not perform a procedure that is not necessary. He is honest, caring, and a real professional. I started seeing Dr. Poindexter over 15 years ago for my second chin augmentation. The first one was performed by a very conservative plastic surgeon. While the original outcome was good, it was not exactly what I had in mind. Dr. Poindexter replaced my implant and tightened my neck muscle. I have been extremely pleased and have had several procedures since. I have, and will continue to see, Dr. Poindexter and refer patients to him. The entire staff-from the front desk to the nurses-are friendly, professional and caring. I highly recommend Austin-Westin."- J.V. / Yelp / Dec 07, 2016
"Doctor Weston performed a rhinoplasty, chin implant and direct neck sculpting for me back in September and I am very pleased with the results. I am a 24yr old male and I always wanted a “stronger” chin and smaller nose. Dr. Weston and the staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable. They covered all aspects of the surgery with me and were good about answering my questions. The surgery itself went just as expected and I am thrilled. Now looking at the 3 months post-op pictures compared to my before pictures, I am very happy with my decision and choosing Dr. Weston."- Anonymous / RateMDs / Dec 25, 2011
"Great Reults, Great Experience - Dr. Knotts and his staff were fantastic! Love my results, I had an chin implant and a lift with implants. Dr. Knotts really listened to what I wanted and delivered! I also barely had any downtime or pain. 3 months later I’m back in the gym bench pressing again! I will definitely come back when I’m ready for more upgrading!"- I. / RealSelf / Jul 30, 2019
What to Expect
You will be under general anesthesia during chin augmentation surgery, which is performed as an outpatient procedure at our accredited surgical facility. Your plastic surgeon will make a small incision under the chin to insert the implant. For some patients, the incision is placed inside the mouth instead of under the chin. Most implants are made of some form of silicone and have a rubbery feel that is very similar to the natural chin area. The implants come in a variety of sizes, and your surgeon will help you choose the right one for you.
Via the same incision under the chin (submental), removal of neck fat can also be accomplished if necessary. The surgery generally takes around one hour.
Right after chin augmentation surgery, a dressing will be applied to the chin where it should remain for 3 – 4 days. Patients can expect some pain, tenderness, and swelling. Some patients may experience a tight, stretched sensation following surgery. These symptoms usually go away in about one week. It is also typical to have some numbness after chin augmentation that can take several weeks or occasionally months to resolve. After the swelling subsides, patients will be able to see the early results of their surgery. Most patients take off work one week for the operation.

define your profile
A short or weak chin not only makes your profile look weak, it can also make your nose appear to be large and disproportionate. While some patients think they need a nose surgery (rhinoplasty), they may only need chin augmentation surgery to achieve full facial harmony and symmetry. It is also common to combine both procedures. If you want to find out if this surgery is right for you, contact our office today to schedule a consultation.
