There are several factors that can lead to the development of loose skin on the body including aging, pregnancy and weight loss. Thankfully, there are procedures that can be performed to diminish loose skin and create a younger, tighter appearance.
A regular tummy tuck places a low incision to pull extra skin down and remove it. A reverse tummy tuck places and incision under the breasts to pull extra skin up and remove it.
A reverse tummy tuck (upper abdominoplasty) can be a beneficial procedure for patients who are concerned about excess/loose skin and unwanted fat on their upper stomach. This includes fat deposits that develop from excess skin below the breasts and are most prominent when sitting. Additionally, a reverse tummy tuck procedure can be useful for patients who have had a previous tummy tuck or liposuction procedure, but are not completely satisfied with their results because of the formation of scar tissue. At Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Reston, VA, our plastic surgeons are proud to offer reverse tummy tuck procedures to help patients look and feel their best. how is a reverse tummy tuck done?
To perform the reverse tummy tuck surgery, a single incision is placed in the natural creases below the breasts (the inframammary folds). Once the incision is made, excess skin is pulled up and removed. The final scar rests under the breasts where it typically conceals well. This procedure is particularly popular in women who already have a scar in this location after a breast reduction or lift. Liposuction and muscle tightening can also be performed through this incision if your doctor deems them necessary.
how long is recovery from a reverse tummy tuck?
The reverse tummy tuck is performed as an outpatient surgery with the patient under general anesthesia, and it typically last about 2 – 3 hours. After an observation period, the patient will be allowed to leave to recover at home. Patients are seen at day 1 for a checkup, and around a week for suture removal. Patients should wear a post-surgical compression garment that will help support their core while they regain their strength and improve their blood circulation for better healing. After surgery, patients should allow their body to rest and heal, but short walks throughout the recovery period are encouraged. Core exercise can be resumed by 6 weeks, but many patients are able to return to sedentary jobs and perform light activities within a week or two.
