is liposuction right for me?

The ideal candidates for liposuction are men and women who:

  • Have excess fat on their body, especially in diet-resistant areas
  • Have tried diet and exercise as a means to lose fat without success
  • Have the appearance of a fuller or bulging body
  • Have overall good health
  • Are willing to commit to a stable pre-op and post-op weight

how does Liposuction work?

Performed in our accredited surgical facility, usually under general anesthesia, liposuction requires small incisions in the target area so one of our plastic surgeons can remove excess fat using a liposuction cannula. This fat can either be discarded or saved to inject into another area of the body, such as with a Brazilian Butt Lift.

During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss your goals and will also decide whether skin removal is recommended at the time of surgery. When fat is removed from the body, ideally the skin contracts well around the liposuctioned area, but as a matter or experience, your surgeon may suggest tucking skin at the time of surgery to achieve a tighter and flatter result. If there is existing skin preoperatively, your surgeon will discuss with you the option of having the skin removed at the same time as liposuction. One example of this is doing a tummy tuck.

Your surgeon may also recommend addition of energy during your liposuction in the form of VASER. This technology uses ultrasonic energy delivered at the time of surgery to help break up stubborn fat deposits and tighten skin. This is especially common in regions of prior scar or in certain areas of the body such as the male chest. Your surgeon will discuss if VASER is right for you at the time of surgery.

What to Expect after liposuction

Liposuction is performed in our accredited surgical center as an outpatient procedure. For patients wanting to stay the night, we also have an overnight facility. Most patients have liposuction performed under general anesthesia. The length of surgery depends on how many areas are being treated. A common area such as abdomen and flanks may take from 1 – 2 hours to complete, depending on how much fat the patient has. Liposuction can be a surgery all on its own; however, it is sometimes paired with other surgeries such as skin tightening procedures for the best cosmetic results. It takes a couple of weeks for patients to recover and we expect to see final results around 3 months. If a well-balanced diet is maintained along with a healthy lifestyle, the results following liposuction surgery can last years. Significant weight gain after liposuction can diminish the result, so patients should be committed to maintaining a stable weight after surgery.

Liposuction FAQ

How much does liposuction cost?
The cost of liposuction varies based on the technique being used and the number of areas being addressed. During your consultation, a member of our team will develop your unique treatment plan to meet your needs and goals. They will also consider your budget. When your plan is ready, estimated costs will be discussed. To help make your cosmetic surgery affordable, Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery accepts several payment options, and we can help you find low-interest financing.

What about nonsurgical liposuction?
There are several nonsurgical options to reduce body fat. Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery offers SculpSure, a noninvasive body contouring system by Cynosure® that reduces stubborn fat in areas such as the abdomen and love handles. Although nonsurgical procedures can help some patients reduce mild to moderate fat pockets, liposuction is still best for most people. Liposuction surgery delivers more consistent and dramatic results. Ask your consulting surgeon about nonsurgical liposuction during your consultation. They will go over the benefits of both methods and help you decide which is best for you.

What about loose skin?
Surgical liposuction only corrects excess fat. If you have loose skin, your surgeon may recommend combining liposuction with a lift surgery. Lipo is often performed with skin tightening surgery, like a tummy tuck, thighplasty, or arm lift, to give you your best results. In your consultation, talk to your surgeon about your concerns like loose skin so a comprehensive treatment plan can be developed.

Will I have scars?
Since liposuction is an invasive surgery, incisions will be made and sutured. These will cause scars; however, our experienced plastic surgeons do their best to reduce their appearance. This includes making small incisions in the natural folds of your body or in less visible areas. After your surgery, your surgeon or a member of our team will explain how to care for your stitches — so they heal properly and fade.

Will my results last?
Before liposuction, it is important to be prepared to maintain your results. While liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in an area, you can still lose and gain weight. We recommend that you be at or close to your ideal weight before having liposuction surgery. Afterward, it's best to remain within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Getting pregnant after liposuction will also alter your results; however, another surgery like a mommy makeover may be performed to refresh your appearance.
