what is Labiaplasty?

The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery is proud to offer labiaplasty for women who have noted significant changes to their vaginal area, want to correct asymmetry or desire a more streamlined appearance. Our talented team of plastic surgeons understand that this can be a sensitive subject to discuss and is dedicated to providing the best patient experience possible. During a private consultation at our Reston, VA office, one of our surgeons will sit down with you to listen to your unique concerns and will work with you to create a customized treatment plan. The goal of a labiaplasty is to carefully alter the skin of the inner and outer labia to create a more symmetrical aesthetic.

Is labiaplasty right for me?

Many women seek the advice and counsel of a trusted plastic surgeon about their enlarged, uneven, pigmented or disproportionate labia majora and minora. The results can be truly amazing. For some women with enlarged or excess labial tissue, sexual intercourse can be painful and wearing certain clothing can be uncomfortable.

Labiaplasty can include working on the inner and/or the outer labia, depending on the patient preference. Female genital reshaping is cosmetic by nature and can result in beautiful, lasting results. It has become one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries for women in the United States.

how does labiaplasty work?

Consulting with one of our plastic surgeons to perform this delicate surgery is the optimal course of action. At your consultation, one of our highly-trained plastic surgeons will discuss your goals and ideal 'look' after surgery. The surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia and is an outpatient procedure. Most patients take pain medication for only a few days and are comfortable with our postop regimen of non-narcotic medications and ice. Restrictions include no sex or insertion into the vagina including tampons for 6 weeks. The sutures used are dissolvable.

what to expect after labiaplasty

After surgery, tight clothing should be avoided so that the area can appropriately recover. Scarring following labiaplasty is usually unnoticeable. Symptoms such as chronic irritations and sexual discomfort may be eliminated completely after surgery. This surgery allows for the vaginal area to look and feel normal, giving women their self-confidence and health back.

Labiaplasty FAQ

How much does a labiaplasty cost?
Your labiaplasty cost will depend on several factors. During your consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, they will listen to your concerns and goals before developing your custom treatment plan. As soon as you've made your choices for your vaginal rejuvenation surgery, your surgeon can estimate your costs. Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery accepts several payment methods, and we can give you information on low-interest medical financing.

Should I choose a plastic surgeon or OB/GYN?
As you research vaginal rejuvenation surgery, you will find that a large majority of OB/GYNs (obstetricians and gynecologists) offer labiaplasty. Although most OB/GYNs are qualified to perform a labiaplasty, they may not be your best choice. An OB/GYN can surgically remove excess skin from your vaginal lips; however, an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like a member of the Austin-Weston team will consider other aspects as well. This ensures minimal scarring, and your final symmetry, contour, and color all look and feel natural.

Will vaginal rejuvenation surgery cause insensitivity?
As with any surgery, there may be short-term numbness in your vaginal area after the procedure is completed. This is usually temporary as your vaginal tissue and skin heal. For those concerned about sexual sensitivity, it's important to understand that a labiaplasty corrects the vaginal lips and will not affect the clitoris. A skilled plastic surgeon like the members of the Austin-Weston team who have many years of experience in labiaplasties will work around the clitoris so that a loss of sensitivity does not occur.

What is the recovery process like after a labiaplasty?
Prior to your procedure, your surgeon or someone on the Austin-Weston team will explain what you can expect following your labiaplasty, as well as tips to keep yourself comfortable during your recovery. You should have some bruising and swelling in your vaginal area, plus some discomfort immediately after your surgery. You should plan to stay home for at least a week before resuming non-strenuous activities. Your surgeon will evaluate your progress during your check-up appointments and let you know when you can resume exercise and sexual activity.

Are there nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments?
Nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments are available, which can improve mild vaginal laxity. However, vaginal rejuvenation is best for significant improvements to re-shape and tighten your labia. During your initial consultation with your plastic surgeon, they will review your options and give you suggestions as to what will best fit your goals.
