Lately, your skin just isn’t cooperating. Maybe it’s how brown spots seem to stick around longer than they used to, or your tone looks uneven no matter what products you use. It’s nothing major, just enough to start thinking about making a change.
BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy is a simple, no-downtime treatment that uses intense pulsed light to help treat common skin concerns like sun damage, redness, and pigmentation. It’s a great option if you want to improve skin health without the recovery time that comes with more aggressive laser treatments.
At Austin-Weston in Reston, we use BBL treatments to address everything from freckles and brown spots to rosacea and visible blood vessels. While the face is a common treatment area, BBL also works well on the neck, chest, shoulders, and hands, anywhere sun exposure tends to leave its mark. We tailor every treatment plan to the individual, so you’ll get care that fits your skin and your goals.
BroadBand Light therapy, sometimes referred to as a more advanced form of IPL, uses pulses of light to gently heat the lower layers of the skin. This process breaks up discoloration, calms redness, and helps stimulate collagen over time.
Unlike traditional laser treatments, BBL is customizable and can be adjusted based on your specific skin type, tone, and concerns. It’s often grouped with intense pulsed light technologies, but it allows for more precise targeting and typically leads to better outcomes. Patients often choose BBL for its ability to refresh the skin with minimal downtime while supporting long-term skin health.
BBL is popular for a reason: it’s one of the easiest ways to visibly improve your skin with minimal effort. You can fit it into your schedule without taking time off to recover, and the BBL results build naturally over time.
Benefits of BBL include:
And because there’s little to no recovery time, you can get the quick treatment and then get back to your routine almost immediately.
While most patients come in wanting to treat the face, BBL is versatile. If you’ve had a lot of sun exposure, other areas like the neck, chest, shoulders, and hands may show early signs of damage too.
We often use BBL to target the chest and neck to smooth out blotchy tone or crepey texture. Hands respond well when the goal is to treat brown spots. Shoulders and arms, especially for people who spend a lot of time outdoors, often benefit from treatment too. If you’ve got a few different problem areas, we can create a plan that makes sure each treatment area gets the attention it needs.
BBL can be a great fit for people looking to refresh their skin and address specific concerns at the same time. It’s commonly used to treat discoloration, lingering effects from acne, and changes in skin tone or texture due to age or sun.
We use it to reduce redness, calm rosacea, fade brown spots and freckles, and improve mild wrinkles or uneven texture. It’s also helpful for skin conditions caused or worsened by sun exposure, like visible scarring or blotchy tone. While BBL won’t fully erase scarring, it can help minimize its appearance and improve the overall look of your skin.
If you’re noticing persistent brown spots, redness, or texture changes that don’t seem to respond to products, you may be a good candidate for BBL. It’s especially helpful for those with lighter skin tones, since the treatment works best when there’s a strong contrast between pigmentation and background skin tone.
During your initial consultation, we’ll review your medical history, discuss your concerns, and help determine if BBL is a smart option for your goals. If not, we’ll guide you toward something that’s a better fit.
Every BBL treatment at Austin-Weston starts with a one-on-one consultation. One of our licensed aestheticians will examine your skin, ask about your goals, and walk you through what to expect. This is when we build your personalized treatment plan, making sure it matches your skin type, history, and schedule.
To prep, we’ll usually ask you to avoid sun exposure and skip any harsh topical products (like retinoids) for a short time before treatment. If you’ve had recent laser treatments or other procedures, we’ll take that into account to make sure your skin is fully ready.
A typical session lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. We’ll start by cleaning your skin and protecting your eyes. Then, the handheld BBL device is passed over the treatment area, delivering quick pulses of light to target pigmentation and uneven tone.
You might feel a warm snap with each pulse, but most people describe it as mild and easy to get through. There’s no general anesthesia, numbing, or downtime required. Once we’re done, your skin might look pink or feel slightly warm, similar to a light sunburn, but this usually fades within a few hours.
After treatment, any dark spots may get darker before flaking off in the days that follow. This is completely normal and part of the process. You’ll likely start noticing clearer skin, more even tone, and improved texture within the first few weeks.
We recommend using gentle products as your skin heals and making SPF a daily habit to protect your progress. Don’t pick or exfoliate early, it can delay results. For the best possible results, most patients do a series of three to six treatments, spaced out over several weeks, followed by occasional maintenance visits.
