Pregnant Again After Your Mommy Makeover? Reston

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding are undoubtedly some of the most miraculous and special stages of life, but for many women, the physical changes associated with having children can be less than ideal and can negatively impact many aspects of their lives. From low self-esteem to a non-existent sex life, being unhappy with your body after having children can cause significant psychological, emotional, and social issues. The professional and caring team of plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Northern Virginia fully understand how the physical effects of childbirth can affect a woman and take great pride in correcting these issues with a mommy makeover – a procedure that usually consists of breast augmentation and/or lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction.

What can a mommy makeover help with?

With the ability to address even the most stubborn cosmetic issues women experience after childbirth and breastfeeding, a mommy makeover can be truly be lifechanging. Some of the most common complaints that can be addressed by a Northern Virginia mommy makeover by the talented plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston include:

  • Sagging, deflated breasts

  • Loss in breast volume

  • Excess abdominal skin and fat

  • Protruding pouch or pooch on tummy

Am I a good candidate for a mommy makeover?

The best way to determine if a mommy makeover is right for you is to be evaluated by the award-winning team of plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery. During your initial consultation, your plastic surgeon will discuss with you your goals, explain the different procedures to you in detail, answer all of your questions fully, and create a tailored plan of action that will best meet your needs.

In general, ideal mommy makeover candidates are in relatively good health, have reached their approximate goal weight and have maintained it for at least six months, are non-smokers, and have no contraindications to anesthesia or surgery.

Another important consideration for patients thinking about undergoing mommy makeover surgery is whether or not they are done having children. It is highly recommended that women wait until they are sure that they do not want to become pregnant again before having the procedure. However, the professional medical team at Austin-Weston understands that life may not always go as planned and also that women and families may have a change of heart, for a variety of reasons, when it comes to having additional children.

What if I get pregnant after my mommy makeover?

Though future pregnancies are not recommended after a mommy makeover surgery, they are certainly possible. If you find yourself unexpectedly pregnant, though you might be scared, it is important to remember that:

A previous mommy makeover surgery will not harm the pregnancy.

Many women who have an unplanned pregnancy after mommy makeover worry that the previous surgery will have a negative impact on the pregnancy and fetus. Fortunately, the body is extremely adaptable, and women in Northern Virginia who have undergone a mommy makeover in the past can rest assured that it is completely safe for you and your baby during a current pregnancy. A tummy that has been surgically tightened will still stretch enough to allow room for the growing womb.

It is likely that you will still be able to breastfeed.

Though there are some exceptions, many women are still able to successfully breastfeed even after a breast augmentation and/or lift, and the breastmilk is safe for baby.

Unwanted effects of pregnancy after a mommy makeover

Even though having had a previous mommy makeover will not harm you or your future pregnancy, it is still advised to wait until you are sure that you are done having children before undergoing the procedure. Some of the unwanted effects of pregnancy after mommy makeover include:

The previous results can be compromised or reversed.

With any future pregnancy, a woman will experience similar physical changes (though perhaps to a different degree) as with previous pregnancies. An expanded midsection and swelling breasts can “undo” what was achieved by your original tummy tuck.

A second or subsequent procedure may be required.

If you become pregnant after a mommy makeover, you may ultimately require another mommy makeover – and/or a revision – to restore the results of your original procedure. As with any surgical procedure, a revision or subsequent surgery may be more complicated and possibly less successful than the original due to scar tissue and other factors.

What do I do if I am already pregnant after my mommy makeover?

In short: enjoy your pregnancy and the birth of your child! The surgical team at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery will look forward to creating a plan to restore your pre-pregnancy body after you have given birth, finished breastfeeding, and given yourself an adequate amount of time to heal.
