Chemical Peels: Everything You Need to Know... Literally

To peel or not to peel? Is that your question? Your face is an important part of ‘you,’ which is why you must treat it with care. While washing your face and applying moisture is a great start to continuing your youthful look, chemical peels are another way to keep your face looking fresh.

For Starters, What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of skin on the face, neck, or hands. So, whether you struggle with fine lines, wrinkles, or uneven skin tone, a chemical peel might be the right solution to your problems.

Chemical peels, just like many other solutions, come in various strength and formulas. Despite the strength, a chemical peel usually consists of applying a solution to your skin which will begin the exfoliation process, resulting in the top layer of skin to shed (or peel off) to reveal the healthy skin underneath. The new skin will appear brighter, smoother, and less wrinkled. However, just like many procedures, you are probably dreading the potential side effects that may or may not occur. So, what can you do to prepare?

Picking the 'Right' Peel

Before a getting a chemical peel, it is important to discuss with your medical aesthetician which peel and strength are best for your skin type and desired results. Chemical peels strengths can range from light, superficial, medium, or deep. Each type uses different formulas and techniques to get rid of problem areas on your skin.

Discuss Medications

It is important to be open and honest with your aesthetician during your consultation when discussing any prescription medications you are currently taking. Depending on the dosage, your aesthetician may temporarily advise that you temporarily stop taking the medication leading up to the peel to ensure there are no interferences or reactions between the two.

After-Care

Depending on the chemical peel, strength of treatment, your skin, and desired results, aftercare instructions will vary depending on the individual. Be sure to discuss potential side effects and irritations with your aesthetician to be fully prepared and educated before having your treatment.

Treatment Time

Exfoliate

Your skin care professional will begin the treatment by prepping your skin with a peeling solution. The solution will be applied directly to your skin using a small brush or cotton swab. While some describe this part of the process as feeling a warming sensation, others describe it as a minor tingling or slight burning sensation.

Peel Removal

At the conclusion of your treatment, the peel is removed using cool water and a neutralizing agent. When your skin has dried the peel is complete, and you can be on your way.

The Results

After your peel, the skin will sometimes have the appearance of a minor sunburn or slight redness. This can last anywhere from a few hours to several days depending on the strength of the chemical peels and your skin. Be sure to avoid any exposure to the sun exposure and refrain from smoking afterward, as this can cause unwanted side effects.

Having a chemical peel can transform your skin and give you a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. Whatever the reason, be sure to follow the directions provided by the aesthetician to achieve the results that will leave you with a smile on your new, youthful face!
