About IPL

If you are bothered by how your skin appears because of fine lines, dark spots, or sun damage, Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery, offers Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) as a potential treatment option. Also known as BroadBand Light or BBL, this photofacial treatment uses a laser to rejuvenate aging skin, specifically targeting dark areas resulting from skin damage.

As the effects of BBL treatment happen, you should begin to see a healthier complexion with an improved skin tone and decreased pigmentation spots.

Ideal Candidates

An IPL photofacial reaches the deeper layers of your skin to treat many complexion blemishes (particularly brown lesions and sun spots) with minimal or no recovery needed. Ideal candidates for an IPL photofacial at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery can have several problems with their skin, such as rosacea, sun damage, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), rough texture, wrinkles, visible pores, redness, freckles, sun and age spots, or spider veins. The procedure is performed by one of our licensed estheticians. No anesthesia is required and patients can go home the same day.

Procedure Techniques

A photofacial is done at our Reston, VA office in around 20 – 30 minutes in one of our Skin Care Center rooms. To prepare for the treatment, your esthetician will wash and dry your skin before protecting your eyes with shields. The photofacial is performed with a handheld wand that will pass over the skin while emitting laser energy pulses. While many patients may have mild discomfort throughout the photofacial, it's usually bearable given the quick treatment length. After the treatment, your complexion may be slightly pink and swollen but this resolves in a few hours.

What to Expect

There usually is no recovery period suggested with a photofacial, but you may leave our office with your complexion a little swollen and pink. This will go away naturally in about a day — it may be masked with cosmetics if you prefer. Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery recommends you use a healing cream on the skin to minimize any irritation and promote healing. It may also help to use an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine to reduce swelling. After 2 – 5 days, the irregularities under the skin will rise to the surface and then start to flake away. It is important to protect your skin with sunscreen all the time after getting a photofacial and to not pick at your skin while it heals. While you will have visible improvements after your first treatment, your complexion will get ideal results with multiple photofacial treatments. We suggest most patients get 3 – 6 sessions scheduled every four weeks.

Get Back your Glow

You probably didn't think much about your skin health when you had clear skin, but once damage, including wrinkles, brown spots, and other issues are developing, you now may be interested in treatments that correct your appearance. We encourage you to find out more about IPL photofacial treatments by contacting our Reston, VA office and making an appointment for a skin examination with one of our plastic surgeons. With photofacial treatments at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we can reach the deeper layers of damaged skin to help create a youthful glow and a smooth complexion.
