Reverse Tummy Tuck (Upper Abdominoplasty) – Northern Virginia

50 Procedures ( View All )

There are several factors that can lead to the development of loose skin on the body including aging and significant weight loss. Thankfully, there are procedures that can be performed to diminish loose skin and create a younger, tighter appearance. A reverse tummy tuck (upper abdominoplasty) can be a beneficial procedure for patients who are concerned about excess/loose skin and unwanted fat on their upper stomach. This includes "bra fat pads" that develop from excess skin below the breasts and are most prominent when sitting. Additionally, a reverse tummy tuck procedure can be useful for patients who have had a previous tummy tuck or liposuction procedure, but are not completely satisfied with their results because of the formation of scar tissue. At Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Reston, VA, our board-certified plastic surgeons are proud to offer reverse tummy tuck procedures to help patients look and feel their best. Ideal Candidates

Candidates for a reverse tummy tuck procedure need to be in good overall health and have realistic expectations for their results. Ideally, women who are wanting a reverse tummy tuck will not be planning to get pregnant in the future. Pregnancy after a reverse tummy tuck will greatly affect and alter the results of the procedure. A reverse tummy tuck can be beneficial for both men and women who have experienced extreme weight loss and are now at their goal weight. It can also be helpful for women who have excess or loose skin due to pregnancy and/or aging. During the initial consultation, we will listen to your concerns and goals while also examining the your stomach before discussing any recommendations. Prior to the actual procedure, you will receive a custom treatment plan that will achieve your desired results.

Surgical Technique

To perform the reverse tummy tuck surgery, a single W-shaped incision or two smaller incisions will be made in the natural creases between the bottom of the breasts (the inframammary fold). Once the incision is made, excess skin will be removed and light liposuction may be performed on excess pockets of fat to create a smooth result. The remaining skin will be pulled tight and the incision will be sutured closed.

During/After Surgery

The reverse tummy tuck is performed as an outpatient surgery with the patient under general anesthesia, and it typically last about 2 – 3 hours. After an observation period, the patient will be allowed to leave to recover at home. Patients should schedule a follow-up appointment at our office about two weeks after their surgery so their results and recovery can be assessed. Patients should wear a post-surgical compression garment that will help support their core while they regain their strength and improve their blood circulation for better healing. After surgery, patients should allow their body to rest and heal, but short walks throughout the recovery period are encouraged. Most patients will need about 4 – 6 weeks to recover from their procedure, but many are able to return to sedentary jobs and perform light activities within a few weeks.
