About Fat Transfer

A fat transfer, or fat grafting surgery, is when fat cells from one area of the  body are moved to another area of the body to fill in a region of contour. This can be performed virtually anywhere in the body, but the most common areas are the buttocks and thighs. The fat is removed from one area of the body using liposuction, and then it is transferred to another area for grafting by injecting it with a syringe. Other common areas for grafting are into the face, hands or any other indented areas.

When fat is grafted into the buttocks, the term commonly used is a Brazillian Butt Lift. To set up an appointment with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, call Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Reston, VA.

Ideal Candidates

Men and women are turning to plastic surgeons to perform fat transfers to plump cheeks, fill lips, and make buttocks and hips fuller and more shapely. Great candidates for a fat transfer:

  • Have areas of the body with enough excess fat for liposuction
  • Have areas of the body that are flat or thin and need volume
  • Have overall good health

What to Expect

Once the patient is under general anesthesia or local sedation, an instrument called a cannula is inserted into the skin to suction out the fat from the desired area. Incisions for this procedure are routinely very small and hide well. The removed fat is then sorted and purified before being put into a syringe for the transfer. One of our plastic surgeons will inject the fat into the desired area needing volume. This is usually done in multiple planes so the fat settles smoothly. This process may have to be performed several times (also known as a layered fat grafting) for the best results. Individuals will see redness and swelling initially, but much of the swelling is down in a week or two and postop photos are taken around 3 months.

Anticipated Results

Patients receiving a fat transfer will be initially swollen and the grafted areas may look overfilled at first. As the fat settles into the new area of the body, some will be reabsorbed by the body. The fat that survives has the ability to live in that region forever, though certain areas of the body like the buttocks are better for fat graft survival than others like the lips. In some cases, patients may desire more than one fat grafting session. If there are small regions needing more volume after one fat grafting session, some patients choose to have dermal fillers for a small amount of quick and easy correction.
