Facelift for Men
The benefits of facelifting are especially noticeable in the jowl and cheek area. This skin tends to droop and wrinkle with age, and by tightening and lifting the skin and soft tissues, a more rejuvenated appearance is possible. A facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other rejuvenating procedures like browlift, midface lift, eyelids and neck lifting. While there are many different marketing terms to describe facelifting, such as ‘mini’ or ‘S’ or ‘deep plane,’ all share the same general principle of making an incision in front of the ear and sculpting the tissues beneath the skin, then removing the excessive skin and placing the final scar in an inconspicuous location. The details of how a facelift would affect you individually are best visited during a formal consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons.
A facelift incision in males is typically placed in front of the ear, and then continues around the earlobe and back behind the ear. There is a natural change in skin thickness and contour at this location, and the incision is typically hidden well after surgery. Variations in incision placement can be made depending if the male patient wears sideburns, has facial hair, keeps a short hairstyle, or has no hair.
A facelift surgery is done on an outpatient basis. The night of surgery, bandages are kept in place and you have plenty of medication to be comfortable. You are seen the next day in the office and bandages are removed. An appointment is made for around 7 days to remove some sutures, and then again between 10 days and 2 weeks to remove the remaining sutures. It may take several months for the swelling to entirely resolve, but most patients are out in public doing regular activities within a few weeks. Scars continue to fade after the procedure and frequently mature to being near invisible.
Maintaining Your Facelift
During your postop recovery period, you will meet with one of our skin care providers, a licensed aesthetician, who will advise you on sun protection and topical creams to maximize your recovery. Patients frequently have occasional Botox and/or fillers to keep a fresh and rested appearance. A good facelift result should last 7-10 years before tissues relax enough that more surgical lifting could be considered.
