A Wrinkle in Time for Cosmetic Surgery Patients

Juvederm is the Latest Cosmetic Filler Offering Minimally Invasive Options for Smoothing Wrinkles

Reston, VA     Time traveling back to a younger looking, smoother face just got easier.  Cosmetic fillers, such as the recently developed Juvederm injectable gel, are a fast, easy and less expensive alternative to traditional cosmetic surgery.  Cosmetic fillers are a popular and safe alternative for those not yet in need or ready for a face lift or other invasive procedure, or for those lacking the necessary time to recover. Minimally invasive, non-surgical facial procedures are on the rise, according to The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery of Reston, VA.  The Austin-Weston Center has performed numerous Juvederm treatments and reports that the use of dermal fillers continues to rise in popularity. According to a new survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, there was a 69% increase in non-invasive procedures in the cheeks among women since 2000.  Men are even more enthusiastic, with a 91% increase in non invasive procedures since 2000.  Of the 12 million cosmetic procedures performed annually in the U.S., approximately 1 million involve injectable fillers.

Cosmetic fillers are substances that are injected under the skin to instantly smooth out wrinkles and folds along the side of the nose and mouth.  Fillers are also used to create fuller lips, lift the corners of the mouth, and for chin and cheek augmentations. Juvederm, similar to the popular Restylene, is the next generation of filler that uses hyaluronic acid to temporarily plump up the volume of skin and add structure underneath. Cosmetic fillers using hyaluronic acid have been found to produce positive results as the substance is a natural complex sugar already existing in the body’s cells.  It is a major component of the matrix of the dermis, the underlying connective tissue of the skin, along with collagen and elastin.  Bovine collagen was the first FDA-approved cosmetic filler and is still commonly used for smoothing wrinkles.  However, collagen can sometimes cause allergic reactions in recipients and a waiting period is required for allergy testing.  Fillers using hyaluronic acid do not pose the potential for allergic reaction and do not require testing prior to use, making them convenient and simple for first time users.

Hyaluronic acid retains water like a sponge, absorbing more than 1000 times its weight, while hydrating the skin and plumping it.  Aging cells lose the ability to produce hyaluronic acid naturally and the skin loses volume resulting in facial wrinkles, folds and thinning lips.  Dermal fillers such as Juvederm temporarily replace the lost volume and restore the skin’s youthful, smooth appearance.  Because of its moldable gel consistency, Juvederm also smoothly fills in facial depressions, contour irregularities, skin defects and acne scars. The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery notes that having a doctor administer the injections is always preferable for the best results.  Another consideration is that a trained physician can detect whether one type of filler is better suited to an individual patient because of their skin’s structure, or may determine that a surgical procedure is best.

Juvederm treatments generally take about 30 minutes and results will appear immediately, with the lifting of wrinkles above the injection site.  Anesthesia is not generally required although it is available if needed.  Following the treatment the targeted area will be swollen and red, a temporary condition lasting a day or two.  This is completely normal, yet in rare cases it may last for several weeks.  Side effects are minimal as Juvederm consists of hyaluronic acid naturally existing in the body, which does not have the potential for allergic reaction as collagen injections do.  The length of time that the treatment lasts is individual to each patient and depends on age, lifestyle and condition of the skin.  The majority of patients still have 50-80% of the effects remaining after six months or more from their initial injection date and most have an additional touch-up treatment within a year.

The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery is now the largest free standing facility in the area with three nationally respected surgeons on board, Dr. George Weston, Dr. Byron Poindexter and Dr. Robert Sigal.  The Austin-Weston Center invites interested parties to come in for a complimentary consultation on any of their surgical procedures or minimally invasive options such as the Juvederm dermal filler.  Call 703-893-6168 or visit their website at: www.austin-weston.com.
